"I mean it was decent money especially if you were at least an E5. No bills, no rent, no wife, no kids, nothing really to spend it on and it's 100% tax-free...
I was probably averaging about 5k a month which isn't a ton of money, but if you factor in that would be after taxes because you paid no taxes when you're deployed it's probably closer to making $7k month.
Also anyone who takes advantage of reenlisting while on deployment usually gets their bonus tax-free. I reenlisted during one deployment and got a tax-free 52,000 bonus. And because you really can't spend it on anything If you do 6 to 8 months you're going to come back with enough money to put a sizable down payment on a house.
    That's what I did.
This was also through 2007 to 2012 when the cost of living was a lot cheaper. After every deployment I managed to swoop up a new house which is why I got out of the Marine Corps after 12 and a half years with four rental properties.
Combine that with my medical retirement which includes medical and dental, and I've been pulling an easy six figures a year after taxes since I was 31 years old and retired. I do not have a job. I ride my Harley across the US and enjoy life. About to close on house number five at the end of this month."
