Mindeközben Mark Karpeles-nek gyanúsak a költözés körülményei :)

Transferring data from servers to servers, even from EU to the US, is not so difficult and can probably be done in less than 24 hours.

With a severe security breach, it is likely they are required to keep current servers disks frozen so investigation can be done (including erased data recovery, etc), and as such it is likely easier to setup a new infrastructure somewhere else (why in the US, however, is a good question. Unless Bitstamp got regulatory clearance, it could lead to servers - and bitcoins - seized).

Identifying the root cause is an investigation work, and depending on the extend of the hack, the actual workflow can be completely different. Assuming access logs weren't lost, it is easy to find out how the hacker got in, and fix the issue is trivial (although using the same system afterward without a full external audit may be a bad idea - but the Bitcoin exchange industry do not allow an exchange to stay down for months while a proper audit is done. Developing a new system can partially solve this, except one could be left wondering if a system put together in hurry will be safe).

Now there is little known about what is going to actually happen and what is currently being done. I'm guessing everything will be back to normal soonish™.
