Itt van angolul, Maurice Hamiltontól is, ha úgy hihetőbb.
Watching with me from the Abu Dhabi Sport television studio, Mika Salo uttered a note of caution: “Ross (Brawn) knows the rules better than anyone. He won’t have got this wrong. There’s something we don’t know about this.”
Brawn’s interpretation focussed on a paragraph in Clause 40.11, which says: “As the Safety Car is approaching the pit entry, the yellow flags and SC (Safety Car) boards will be withdrawn and replaced by waved green flags and green lights at the line.”
There were indeed green flags shown at the final corner and further along the pit straight. This is Brawn’s interpretation: “We believed that the track had gone green and the race was not finishing under a Safety Car - when article 40.13 clearly would have applied. The reason for the Safety Car had been removed, the FIA had announced 'Safety Car in this lap' early on lap 78 and the track had been declared clear by race control. This was further endorsed when the marshals showed green flags and lights after ‘safety car line one’. On previous occasions when it has been necessary to complete a race under a Safety Car, full course yellows are maintained, as in Melbourne 2009. On the last lap, we therefore advised our drivers that they should race to the line and Michael made his move on Fernando for sixth place.”
In short, the rules are confusing. Clause 40.13 would seem to apply if trackside work is on-going during the last lap and the Safety Car, while still necessary, will disappear into the pits in order not to spoil the victory moment for the winner.
Brawn’s contention is that the Safety Car’s work was over and the track was clear, or ‘green’, from the so-called ‘first safety car line’, which is just after the pit entrance. In other words, overtaking can take place from that point on. (This is a modification to the old rule which said no overtaking could take place until the start/finish line had been reached. It’s a point which I confess I, and several others including McLaren and Ferrari, had missed).
Thinking about it now, Mika Salo was absolutely right. Brawn knows the rules better than anyone. Better, even, than the race stewards. There is every chance that Mercedes will win on appeal.
