Ryder Notes: If You Hurt the King He Only Gets Stronger

Jerry Burgess is not used to being kissed in public--certainly not by a bloke. On the Jerez rostrum, Valentino Rossi left the top step to grab Burgess and show his gratitude for the job his team did this weekend. The M1 worked well on a warm track on Friday afternoon, didn't work in the cold of Saturday morning but then decided not to work on a hot track in Saturday afternoon qualifying.

That left Rossi seething and Burgess and the crew with some serious work to do. Warm up this morning was cold again so Rossi went to the grid with geometry changes that transformed his bike from something with no feel at the front and no grip at the rear into something that could see-off his team-mate, win the race and put him on top of the points table. This is the sort of magic trick that Burgess has been performing for years. We shouldn't be surprised by it any more, but it never fails to impress. As did Valentino repeating his Portaloo celebration.

All three men on the rostrum had something to smile about. Rossi's reasons are obvious. Dani Pedrosa in second place missed nearly all of preseason, was really too badly hurt to race in Qatar and shouldn't have been competitive in Motegi. He did both and this time he led his home GP and it took Rossi at his best to beat him. Dani is not shy about saying that there are still plenty of problems with the bike--although it didn't look slow today. Casey Stoner got to stand on the Jerez rostrum for the first time ever so he was pretty pleased too. Rossi is still of the opinion that Stoner will be the major obstacle to retaining his title.

Spanish fans didn't get the wins they expected to back up their three pole positions, they saw an Italian, a Japanese and a Briton (yes!) win. Ironically on the weekend details of next year's Moto2 class started to emerge, the last 250cc GP to be held at Jerez was a stormer. Expect the motor to be a seriously modified CBR600 with a cassette gearbox and other race-worthy alterations. Teams will get 3D drawings of the motor any time now. The hardware should be delivered in September. IRTA expect at least 32 bikes to be on the grid.
