PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 360 successor will reportedly be revealed at press conferences to be held in March.
That’s according to a rumour in the February edition of Game Informer, which claims: "We hear that both Sony and Microsoft are targeting special Apple-style press conferences to unveil their platforms near the Game Developers Conference in late March.
"E3 in June may be the industry's biggest event, but both companies want to give their systems their own limelight," it adds.
Sony declined to comment on the rumour when approached by CVG, but the site’s own sources also indicated that both consoles will be revealed before E3.
And the platform holder has hinted it may officially announce PlayStation 4 as early as May, according to comments attributed to Hiroshi Sakamoto, vice president of the company’s Home Entertainment unit, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week.
Also this week, Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian said that, having spent CES "with a number of companies involved in video game development and distribution", he expects new console hardware from Sony and Microsoft to retail for $350-$400. Sebastian forecast an October 2013 launch for Sony’s new console and a November release for the Xbox 360 successor, although he added that "field checks" revealed there "may be early production issues with PS4".
